For S2: E15, I interview ethnomusicologist Dr. Tim Cooley about his book Surfing about Music. Tim is a music professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his research interests center around popular and vernacular music of Central Europe (notably, Poland) and North America—paying particular attention to the roles of musicking in creating individual and community identities. In this intriguing episode, he and I chat about how surf music and how “musicking about surfing” has changed as cultural ideas about surfing itself changed. This wonderful book is featured on surfinghistorian.com.
