“‘This is the first book I’ve come across that specifically seeks to introduce Surfing to a younger age group’, Dr. Nicholas Ford (University of Plymouth, UK). This book has been designed to help Physical Education Teachers introduce the theme of Maritime Education among students age 11-12 and older. It contains a short funny story that will eventually appeal to parents, surfers and enthusiasts as well, and whose primary goal is to illustrate the importance of acquainting with the surf environment prior to worrying with the surfboard. ‘Maritime Education and Surfing in School’ is part of Bruno Castello da Costa’s strategy in his quest for providing beach goers of all ages with some crucial educational contents to assist in the promotion of overall maritime safety and autonomy. About the Author
I offer pedagogical support to surfing schools in general, trusting that surfing can be taught without pushing students on the waves and preferably not depending on the leash. My work starts from surf swimming, evolving all the way through bodysurfing and board surfing (depending on students’ goals). Surfers willing to improve their surf reading ability and/or to expand their comfort zone within bigger seas are welcome, and so are surfing enthusiasts and even bathers interested in interacting with the beach scenario as a means for outdoor physical activity. Besides running my website SurfingPedagogy.com, I publish 1-minute instructional videos at m.youtube.com/channel/UCZCswzMqvB4bFDLNecBZUVQ. I live in Barra da Tijuca. I hold a degree in Physical Education by the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ), and another one in industrial engineering by the Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ). I am also a military fireman beach lifeguard by the Rio de Janeiro Military Fire Brigade (CBMERJ), currently serving at Barra da Tijuca’s 2nd Maritime Division. I offer private lessons by Barramares (Av. Lucio Costa, 3300), prices starting at R$150/h (march/2018). I have books for sale at Amazon as a result from my research about the pedagogy in the teaching of surfing. I will teach adults, teenagers and children, including swimming initiation to kids ages 3-5 and personal training within the Barra da Tijuca community.
